My Local Brew Works (MLBW), the city’s premier nano-brewery specializing in custom craft contract brewing, is thrilled to debut Mischievous Mild (3.8%), now pouring at A Man Full of Trouble (127 Spruce St.), Philadelphia’s only surviving colonial tavern, as the latest beer in the brewery’s newest partnership. Together, the partners set out to honor the tavern’s colonial roots by modernizing a period beer recipe for the occasion. The brew pays tribute to the tavern’s 18th-century namesake, “The Man Loaded with Mischief”, which, fittingly, operated illegally until 1773. Brewed with local Deer Creek malts, East Kent Goldings hops, and Liberty Bell Ale yeast, the highly sessionable British golden mild ale offers a delicate, malt-driven profile with notes of fresh bread, honey, and soft floral spice.
A testament to My Local Brew Works’ technical expertise, a cask-conditioned version of Mischievous Mild went on tap at A Man Full of Trouble on Friday, October 30. Secondary fermentation in the cask imparts a deeper flavor and finer carbonation to further Mischievous Mild’s distinctive drinkability. The brew’s release date is an intentional nod to Mischief Night, offering beer lovers and spooky-season enthusiasts alike a hauntingly delicious sip to toast the season.
A Man Full of Trouble, the historic Society Hill bar and museum, reopened in 2022 to house the urban tasting room for Chester County’s SUCCESSION Fermentory. SUCCESSION is built on the principle of sourcing clean, farmed and foraged ingredients from across Southeastern Pennsylvania to create farmhouse-style beers that reflect the region’s agriculture and ecology.
Like My Local Brew Works, SUCCESSION Fermentory is led by three brewers with deep roots in the region’s food and beverage industries and a shared passion for producing unique, meaningful brews. MLBW embodies that ethos by inviting beer-loving groups, companies, and organizations into the brewing process, crafting cutting-edge beers inspired by styles and flavors from across the globe and throughout history.
Further exploring historic brewing traditions, MLBW has partnered with Quaker City Mercantile for Spirits of Independence, presented by the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks. MLBW will host a tasting of the Robert Hare Porter (6.5%), adapted from its original 18th-century recipe, accompanied by a lecture about the significance of porter-style beers in colonial Philadelphia by Steven Grasse, founder of Quaker City Mercantile. The collaborative brew will be showcased at Society Hill’s historic Powel House (244 S. 3rd St.) on Friday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online through Eventbrite.
My Local Brew Works’ expert team has quietly become a go-to collaborator in the Philadelphia-area brewing community, showcasing its one-of-a-kind brews at a broad array of the region’s most celebrated destinations, including:
- Birchrun Hills Farm, a small dairy farm and creamery in Chester County, has partnered with the MLBW team to craft a rotating selection of beers, uniquely brewed using the same grains fed to the farm’s livestock
- Monk’s Cafe is currently serving up an original MLBW brainchild, the Jawnmower (4.4%), a Belgian-style single
- Bolo, the James Beard Award-nominated Latin American dining room and rum bar, offers Philly’s only gourmet ceviche and custom beer pairing: Bolo Light (5.2%), Bolo Dark (5.8%), and the Playa Brava IPA (6.3%), all developed in tandem with Chef Yun Fuentes
- Butcher Bar is currently serving the ultra-refreshing Positively Philly Pale Ale crafted in partnership with the PHL17 Positively Philly team.
ABOUT MY LOCAL BREW WORKS
My Local Brew Works is a Philadelphia-based nanobrewery that specializes in brewing custom beers, whether it be an exclusive beer for a bar or restaurant, or a custom beer for a special event. MLBW offers unique, hands-on experiences for clients who want a say in the brewing process; to create a one-of-a-kind event; or to brew custom beer with friends, family, corporate colleagues, or beyond.
Founded by 2020’s Home Sweet Homebrau Competition People’s Choice winners, Wayne Humphrey and Tim Montague, MLBW began in 2010 when the two started homebrewing in a Philadelphia backyard and never looked back. The essence of what makes MLBW different is its ability and ingenuity in creating several beers of various styles and strengths, from the same original mash, and the name “My Local” derives from the British expression of referring to one’s favorite or village pub as “my local”, which Tim picked up on when garnering his PhD in England and gaining a passion for beer.
My Local Brew Works is located in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, nestled in the historic Globe Dye Works building. For more information on MLBW, or to book a brew day, visit www.mylocalbrewworks.com. Keep up with the brewery on Instagram and Facebook.
