As Philadelphia prepares to take center stage for America’s 250th anniversary, Sassafras, Old City’s “Grand Dame” of neighborhood bars, offers a reminder that history isn’t confined to museums and monuments, it can also be experienced over a cocktail. For more than 50 years, Sassafras has occupied a lovingly restored building dating to the 1870s, just blocks from the birthplace of American democracy. While much of the hospitality industry chases trends, Sassafras has built its identity around preserving a sense of place. Century-old tile, chartreuse flocked wallpaper, vintage fixtures, moody lighting, and carefully maintained architectural details create an atmosphere that feels transported from another era while remaining distinctly contemporary.

Ever evolving while maintaining an authentically established feel, Sassafras’ robust bar program offers well-crafted renditions of classic cocktails and nouveau sippers, offering the best of both the Sloe Gin Fizz, popularized in the mid 19th century, and the Porn Star Martini, a trend peaking in 2023-24. Alongside weekly live jazz performances and a lively, inviting atmosphere, Sassafras is a persisting pillar of living, sippable history.

Hours of operation: Monday and Tuesday 4pm—2am, Wednesday through Sunday 12pm—2am
