Celebrate National Oyster Day

(August 3, 2021) – Nothing elevates a perfect summer afternoon or evening quite like freshly shucked oysters. In honor of National Oyster Day on Thursday, August 5, we’ve rounded up stellar variations of the classic shellfish hors d’oeuvre from Philadelphia locales for foodies to enjoy in celebration.

East Passyunk Avenue, home to more than 160 independently-owned businesses in South Philadelphia, offers a diverse culinary scene including River Twice. The modern American restaurant boasts hand-crafted dishes using sustainable, locally-sourced ingredients such as the signature Sweet Amalia Oysters prepared with freshly shucked oysters, a rich strawberry kosho, and anise hyssop oil.  

Guests may indulge in this masterpiece indoors or al fresco overlooking the iconic Singing Fountain along the Avenue.

Royal Boucherie, Old City’s lively neighborhood bistro, offers two oyster dishes featured as part of the famed, robust raw bar. Offerings include East and West Coast Oysters on the Half Shell, available for a half dozen or full dozen. Additionally, the illustrious Plateaus de la Mer is composed of Executive Chef Matt Buehler’s daily selection of fresh shellfish including oysters, shrimp, lobster, and crudo, served in small or large portion.

Imbibers may pair either shellfish-focused dish with a refreshing French Maid composed of cognac, cucumber, mint, lime, and Velvet Falernum for the ultimate experience.  

Hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday 4 – 10 pm.

The Twisted Tail, the popular Southern-inspired restaurant and bar on Headhouse Square, is known for its American comfort food offerings including the fan-favorite Blue Point Oysters composed of a daily selection of oysters and served alongside three savory dipping options for marinating the fresh oysters in – including a vodka cocktail sauce, a flavorful mignonette, and hot sauce.  

Additionally, shellfish enthusiasts may enjoy ½ Dozen Blue Point Oysters for during the bustling Social Hour, available Monday through Sunday from 4 – 6pm.  

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 4 – 12am, Saturday from 11 – 12am, and Sunday from 10 – 12am.
